Der Film verfolgt dasselbe Thema wie schon Scotts 1979 erschienener Film Alien – Das unheimliche Wesen aus einer fremden Welt und ist zugleich eine Fortsetzung des Films Prometheus – Dunkle Zeichen aus dem Jahr 2012. Als Weiterführung der ursprünglichen Alien-Filmreihe handelt der Film von einer Raumschiffbesatzung, die Anfang des 22. Jahrhunderts mit dem Raumschiff Covenant auf einer Kolonisations-Mission ist. Die Fortsetzung spielt zehn Jahre nach den Ereignissen in „Prometheus“.
